Twin Cities PBS (tpt) offers Next Avenue, a service aimed to meet the needs and unleash the potential of older Americans through the power of media. Next Avenue is public media’s first and only national journalism service for America’s booming older population, providing content that delivers vital ideas, context and perspectives on issues that matter most as we age.
As much as public television stations provide a trusted and unparalleled service for children, Next Avenue will hyper-serve America’s booming older population, helping them to navigate a new life stage. Having maintained a relationship with public television all their lives, it is only natural that this audience will turn to public broadcasting as a trusted source for information and community.
Fueled by three years of research and planning, Next Avenue received $5 million in grants from The Atlantic Philanthropies, the General Mills Foundation and the Medtronic Foundation to launch the content service.
Next Avenue focuses its content in five key areas:
- Health & Well-being: News, information and advice on physical, mental and spiritual practices that help those in America’s booming 50+ population remain active and engaged in life.
- Money & Security: Insight on managing debt wisely and applying for loans and credit cards for those 50 years and older.
- Work & Purpose: Tips and tricks on how to advance your career, learn new skills and find classes that can help you at work.
- Living & Learning: Diverse programming content that enables older people to continue to build their knowledge, participate in new learning opportunities, connect with others who have similar interests, take up an inter-generational activity, and/or cultivate a new skill.
- Caregiving: Guidance for those in mid-life providing care to elderly parents and relatives and needing to also take care of themselves emotionally.
Next Avenue has served over 40 million people on their site and millions more through platforms and partnerships. They are unique among today’s media because:
- They're members of the PBS system and can be trusted to deliver public media quality.
- They're journalists and experts passionate about serving their audience.
- They've built a network of impeccable sources and prestigious partnerships.
- They're not there for the bottom line, but to make a difference in the lives of their audience.
