Peter Morrill, Idaho Public Television's General Manager, announced in late March 2013 that he will be retiring from his leadership role at the station. Morrill has been General Manager for Idaho Public Television since 1996 and has worked for 34 years at the station. During this distinguished career, he has actively supported and defended the role of public broadcasting: to enlighten, to entertain, and to serve those not otherwise served by mainstream media.
Both the Idaho Senate and House have honored Morrill, for his decades of dedication to public broadcasting on a local and national level.
An article in The Spokeman-Reviewexplained how Morrill made an impact on Idaho elected officials.
"An array of senators have offered praise to Morrill. Among them was Sen. Dean Mortimer, R-Idaho Falls, who said, 'He’s made me a convert.' Mortimer said, 'Many years ago when I came to the Legislature, there was always a little bit of hesitancy … to fund and support our public television.' Mortimer said he never received so many emails as when public TV’s funding was threatened. He said he’s also been impressed with the service over the years, including the way Idaho PTV has opened up legislative proceedings to statewide viewing through live streaming. 'To me, that is worth every dollar that we pay,' he said."
Another article in The Spokeman-Review described the honor given in the state House.
"The House this morning is honoring Peter Morrill, the retiring general manager of Idaho Public Television. 'There are just a few things in this vast state of ours that tie us together,' said Rep. John Rusche, D-Lewiston, a co-sponsor of the proclamation, HP 1, along with House Speaker Scott Bedke, Senate President Pro-Tem Brent Hill, and Senate Minority Leader Michelle Stennett. 'Certainly the Snake River, famous potatoes on our license plate, Highway 95, and Idaho Public Television.' He said, 'This proclamation recognizes the heart and driving force for Idaho Public Television, Peter Morrill, on his retirement after a 34-year career with Idaho Public Television.'"
