APTS Commends the U.S. House Appropriations Committee’s Recommendation for Continued Investment in Public Broadcasting’s Public Safety Infrastructure

WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 12, 2024 – America’s Public Television Stations today commended the House Appropriations Committee for proposing $40 million for public broadcasting’s Next Generation Warning System (NGWS) in the fiscal year 2025 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill.

“America’s Public Television Stations are grateful that the committee continues to support public broadcasters’ essential work in public safety,” said Patrick Butler, president and CEO of America’s Public Television Stations.

“And in a time of partisan division, we appreciate the bipartisan nature of this support, as both Republican and Democratic majorities have invested in this work over the past four years,” Butler said.

“From working with the California Office of Emergency Services on earthquake warnings to building emergency communications networks in Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee, America’s public television stations are partnering with local, State and federal agencies to save lives and protect property every day.

“We are grateful for the strong support for this program from House Appropriations Committee Chair Tom Cole (R-OK) and Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), and Homeland Security Subcommittee Chair Mark Amodei (R-NV) and Ranking Member Lauren Underwood (D-IL). We are hopeful that the strong bipartisan support for the Next Generation Warning System and public media, both in Congress and among the American people, will ultimately ensure that this vital infrastructure program is fully funded to our request of $56 million in the final FY 2025 appropriations package. The greater the investment, the safer the American people will be,” Butler said.
