LAS VEGAS, NV and WASHINGTON, D.C. – April 16, 2023 – At the NAB Show today, Patrick Butler, president and CEO of America’s Public Television Stations (APTS), and Jungsu Song, CEO of the Korean Radio Promotion Association (RAPA), signed an agreement to collaborate on research and projects to advance ATSC 3.0 technology for U.S. public media as it transitions to the ATSC 3.0/NextGen TV standard.
“The new ATSC 3 Next Gen broadcast standard has extraordinary potential to expand the public service mission of public television,” Butler said. “With greater mobility, security, addressability, interactivity, spectrum efficiency, and signal strength, as well as dramatically better picture and sound quality, the NextGen standard provides a platform for a host of new services to benefit the American people.
“South Korea and RAPA have been at the forefront of efforts to roll out ATSC 3 NextGen TV, and we have much to learn from them. In particular, South Korea has found a way to link the NextGen broadcast standard with 5G technology for such a network, and this is a worthy pursuit for public television too.”
Also joining the press conference were Dr. Jin-Bae Hong, Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Science, Korea, and Rick Ducey, Managing Director at BIA Advisory Services.
In addition, John McCoskey, chief operating officer of SpectraRep, described recent ATSC 3.0 tech innovations of interest to public TV stations and RAPA’s Jay Jeon provided personalized tours of the RAPA booth (Future Park 4126) focusing on public media interests.
