America’s Public Television Stations Mourn the Passing of Former Tennessee Governor and Congressman Don Sundquist

WASHINGTON, D.C. - August 27, 2023 - America's Public Television Stations (APTS) president and CEO Patrick Butler issued the following statement today:

"As a consultant to APTS in 2011, Governor Sundquist was instrumental in preserving federal funding for public broadcasting when it was under challenge in the House of Representatives.

"He generously invested his prestige and his enormous goodwill among his former colleagues in Congress on our behalf, and his intercession was immensely useful to our cause.

"On a more personal note, it was my pleasure to know Don for more than forty years, to work with him on the Howard Baker for President campaign in 1980, and to help him draft his inaugural addresses as Governor in 1995 and 1999.

"He was a wonderful friend, a courageous and consequential public servant, and a profoundly good man, and our deepest sympathies go to his dear wife Martha and the Sundquist family."
