WASHINGTON, D.C. – October 30, 2026 – Kate Riley, President and Chief Executive Officer of America’s Public Television Stations (APTS), issued the following statement today on the passing of Beth Courtney, former President and CEO of Louisiana Public Broadcasting (LPB).
“America’s Public Television Stations are saddened by the passing of Beth Courtney, the long-time leader of Louisiana Public Broadcasting.
“Beth was committed to public media for more than four decades, having led LPB for 36 years. When she took over as President and CEO of LPB in 1985, she became the first woman in the U.S. to lead a statewide public broadcasting network.
“Under her leadership, LPB grew from a single station in Baton Rouge to a statewide network of seven broadcast stations and affiliates. She was an inspirational leader, dedicated and passionate about serving the people of Louisiana with unparalleled local public broadcasting services. Beth positioned LPB as a nationwide leader in providing exceptional educational content and services which set a standard in the public broadcasting system.
“Beth’s leadership of LPB will always be remembered for the way LPB told the unique stories of Louisianans to their neighbors and the world, shining a light on the people, places and history that make Louisiana special.
“Beth’s warmth was contagious and her wit was legendary. She was admired wherever she went, including in the halls of Congress where she built many strong relationships.
“We are grateful for Beth’s service on the Board of Trustees of America’s Public Television Stations from 1997-2003, including as Chair and Vice Chair. Her insightful leadership and contributions have had a lasting impact on our organization.
“Beth will be greatly missed, but her dedication and service to our system have built a legacy that will continue long into the future. We extend our deepest sympathies to her family, friends and colleagues.”
