Idaho Public Television recently received a 2006 Northwest Regional Emmy Award for Dialogue: Nez Perce Water Agreement in the Interview/Discussion category. Dialogue premiered in November 1994 and remains the only statewide call-in television program in Idaho.
Nez Perce Water Agreement featured a discussion among Nez Perce Tribal Chairman Anthony Johnson,
Rep. Dell Raybould (R-Rexburg) and Sen. Skip Brandt (R-Kooskia) about the terms of the largest water rights agreement in Idaho history. The Nez Perce Water Agreement attempts to resolve the Nez Perce Tribe's claims to much of the water in the Snake River drainage by having the tribe drop all claims to in-stream flows on water outside its reservation. In exchange, the tribe will receive millions of dollars in an economic development and habitat restoration trust fund, new water systems, BLM land, and water from the Clearwater River for its consumptive use on the reservation.
This award-winning program was presented as part of Tapped Out: Idaho’s Water Crisis, an examination of key water issues facing the Idaho Legislature.
