Congressional Recess Engagement
America's Public Television Stations (APTS) strongly encourage all stations to invite their federal lawmakers to visit their station during congressional recess. The dates of the congressional recesses, when lawmakers are in their home states and districts, are available here. These recesses are great opportunities for stations to invite their Members of Congress to tour the station or attend a station sponsored event, allowing lawmakers to see and experience the many services the station provides their constituents.
APTS has compiled a Congressional Recess Best Practices Guide to help stations maximize interactions with Members of Congress. The Guide includes:
- A sample meeting request letter.
- Tips on meeting with your federal lawmakers, including what to do if you can not schedule a station visit.
- Talking points on public media's work in the areas of education, public safety and civic leadership and the FY 2018 Appropriations Requests.
Stations can also refer to the Maximizing Congressional Recess Engagement webinar presented by the APTS Legislative Team for more on best practices in developing and cultivating Congressional relationships.
Stations may contact the APTS Legislative Team with questions. The Legislative Team would also like to be apprised of stations' progress in scheduling their meetings. APTS thanks stations for their continued engagement.
